We provide both private and small group violin lessons and can also teach viola lessons at Firebird Studios. First and foremost you have to enjoy playing and be inspired to practice and we strive to create that with the lessons we teach. The lessons are fun, informative and can range from 30 minutes to 1 hour, or longer if you have the stamina!
Rockschool grades
If you’re looking to work towards graded violin and viola exams, then we recommend RSL Awards’ Rockschool program. It is the pre-eminent course for people studying Pop and Rock music. They range from Entry all the way to Grade 8 and can be counted towards your UCAS points once you reach grade 6 and beyond.
As an RSL Awards examination centre, you’ll be studying in the very place that you’ll take your exam. Hopefully lessening those exam nerves!

Meet the Teacher
Bethany (they/she) is a Bristol-based violinist, composer, and educator with a background in classical viola, piano and voice. After moving to Bristol, they transitioned to classical and folk violin and have since built a diverse career spanning performance, composition, facilitation and teaching.
As a teacher, Bethany offers violin, viola, and piano lessons to students of all ages and abilities. With years of experience in both classical and contemporary music, they create engaging, student-focused lessons, emphasizing technique, musicality, and creativity. Bethany has taught pupils from age 5 to age 80, and approaches teaching holistically, adapting to the pupils interests, needs and skills. They are happy to guide pupils through grades, or explore the instrument for fun as a tool for self-expression!
As a composer and performer Bethany releases as Bethany Ley. Bethany has worked on a range of projects, including writing for Hans Zimmer’s string players on Ishmael Ensemble’s Rituals, composing for The Little Prince (commissioned by Theatre Royal), Humble Courage (Celestial & MDA), and arranging for The Coming Storm (BBC Radio 4 with Ishmael Ensemble). With support from BBC Radio 6, BBC Bristol, and The Psychic Garden, they released their unique work Suite for Solo Violin and Software Abuse with Slow Worm Records in 2022, and their debut EP Sundial with Lo Recordings (Aphex Twin, Grimes) in 2024. Bethany has performed a sell out UK tour, guested on Glastonbury’s infamous West Holts stage, and performed internationally, including a recent performance of their own work at Ex Convento di San Francesco in Italy in 2024.
